Liza Norman and Theo
"It’s pretty subtle. But I look carefully to see a smile peeking out of the corners of a client’s mouth. Someone who was afraid a minute ago, or was tucked into a ball in his wheelchair. Someone who is blind and didn’t know we were there. I push Theo up against the wheelchair so his back is reachable. I might need to guide the client’s hand down to touch him and give little strokes. And then it happens. A little smile, or a big ear-to-ear one. It’s the recognition of the joy and comfort most of us feel when petting a dog."
– Liza Norman, pet therapy volunteer
Liza Norman and her registered therapy dog, Theo, have been visiting Woods faithfully since 2004. Having been on the board of a nursing home for over 20 years, Liza Norman was looking for a new way to serve others. Liza had heard of Woods Services before, but the broad scope of programs and facilities were a surprise when she came on campus. She comments, “The more I learn about Woods as a volunteer, the more proud I am that I am associated with the organization.”
Once or twice each month, Liza and her canine companion brighten the halls of various campus residences. They continue to volunteer at Woods because they know they are making a difference. Whether it be a sensory experience for nonverbal clients or an interactive session with children, the clients love their visits. Liza quips, “Theo’s Sunday afternoon naps are long and deep. It’s hard work being a therapy dog!”
Liza exemplifies the mission of the Volunteer Program, which is to provide a mutually beneficial experience for our clients and our volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering at Woods, email volunteers@woods.org. There are many opportunities for both one-time and ongoing commitments, and we are flexible to work with your availability and interests to coordinate volunteer hours.
Thank you, Liza and Theo, for your dedication to volunteering at Woods!
