Woods Volunteer Spotlight

Eric Wiegand

This October, we would like to honor Eric Wiegand as Woods’ Volunteer of the Month. As a student at Holy Ghost Preparatory School in Bensalem, PA, Eric worked with residents from Woods Services at the annual IRS Field Day. He found the experience to be most rewarding and knew that Woods was where he would like to complete his volunteer Eagle Project, a requirement to attain the rank of Eagle with the Boy Scouts of America.

Casey George and Colleen Harrison of Woods identified a project that would help the residents enjoy the fabulous garden.  They needed a wheelchair-accessible path between the raised garden beds so the residents could more easily nurture and harvest their bounty.  Eric investigated many methods to fulfill this request and found that the product Presto's Geoblocks was used in various gardens, making wheelchair accessibility possible.  He then contacted Mr. Rick Novack of ACF Environmental, the distributor of the Geoblocks in our area, who generously agreed to provide and ship all the material required to install the system in the garden at no charge.  In addition, the facilities crew at Woods offered to donate the topsoil and mulch required to complete the project.

For more information about ACF Environmental visit their website at http://www.acfenvironmental.com.

Eric is responsible, as project leader, to plan and coordinate all aspects of the project, raise all funds required for the project, acquire all necessary resources including the volunteer manpower, as well as supervise the installation of the paths in the garden.  He is expecting to complete the project by the end of this month so that next season the garden can be enjoyed by all residents of Woods Services.  He will spend more than 100 hours of volunteer time before he completes the entire project.

Thank you Eric for a job well done! We look forward to the completed project.

If you, or someone you know, is interested in becoming a Woods’ volunteer, please email Victoria Brossy, Coordinator of Volunteers, at volunteers@woods.org. We look forward to hearing from you!
