Woods Volunteer Spotlight
Newtown Friends School
With the end of the school year also comes the end of Newtown Friends’ weekly visits to gym class at the Gardner Education Center. The 8th grade class volunteers every Wednesday throughout the school year, participating in games with one of the gym classes.

Their teacher, Steve Haines, has been bringing groups of 8th grade students to Woods Services for the past 11 years. When seeking a community service opportunity for his students, it was important to Mr. Haines that he find a place where his older students would be able to interact with other kids their age. He wanted them to see that even though they may have a disability, they still have many things in common. In his search, he came across Woods Services and a lasting partnership was formed.

Newtown Friends’ students came for their last visit this year in May and they were sad to say goodbye Volunteers from Newtwon Friends Schoolto the clients of Woods. Woods’ clients showed their appreciation to the volunteers by handing out a thank you gift before they left. After they had left, many clients commented that they were sad because they won’t see their friends at all over the summer. They will be anxiously awaiting their arrival back to their gym class in the fall.

Woods Services' Volunteer Program provides groups and individuals with meaningful volunteer experiences from which our clients benefit greatly. There are many opportunities available for both one-time and on-going commitments. For more information, please email Casey George at volunteers@woods.org.
