About Us

Simon

Simon Simon, who has been diagnosed with autism, came to Woods in January 2003, just before his 17th birthday. Simon’s family had hoped to keep him at home for a few more years before placing him in a residential program for adults.

When Simon reached his mid-teens, his level of frustration increased, which he exhibited through inappropriate behaviors. As he grew in size, his level of aggression intensified and life at home became increasingly more difficult for everyone, especially Simon. His parents knew the time had come to find a residential school for him.

“When Simon first arrived, he had difficulty interacting with his peers, disliked reading and just wasn’t sure he wanted to be here. Now, we can’t keep him away from books, he initiates contact with his classmates and he is using his voice to express ideas and needs. He is mastering his computer skills and enjoys writing e-mails to his parents.”

“Simon is now in his fourth year at Woods and we miss him terribly, despite frequent visits with him. But the change for the better is clear to us. Simon is much happier and well-adjusted than he would have been if he’d continued to live with us. He participates in activities at Woods that he couldn’t or wouldn’t take part in at home. Finally, the loving, caring staff gives us a comfort level that money can’t buy.”
