Advances in technology have resulted in equipment that can dramatically improve and enhance skills, enabling people with exceptional needs to reach new levels of personal achievement. Assistive technology has a significant impact on the quality of life of individuals who use it to accomplish tasks they could not otherwise complete independently. It can also improve academic performance as well as increase access to job opportunities and leisure time activities.
Since its establishment, the Center’s staff have adapted keyboards, switches, trackballs and other devices, reviewed hundreds of software programs, and designed special computer workstations for children with autism and other disabilities. They have also improved the ability to repair and customize equipment that enable people to do more for themselves, or make learning less challenging.
“We are proud of all the Center has accomplished over the last ten years,” said Woods’ Educational Administrator, Penny Evans-Kelly, Ph.D., who provides oversight of the Center. “Assistive Technology has given many of our clients the tools they need to lead more independent lives.”
With the support of gifts and grants, Woods recently expanded the scope of the Center to include computer testing and training for Woods’ educational programs, which utilizes technology to support students with a variety of learning needs. "I’m glad that I was able to lend the financial support to establish the Center," states Ms. Squier. "It is my hope that others will see its benefits and support it as I will continue to do.”
