Squier Assistive Technology Center

The Squier Assistive Technology Center was established in 1995 with a gift from Nancy Squier in memory of her sister, Dolores, who lived at Woods for more than 50 years. “Over the years, I have seen Woods grow and expand, enabling its many residents to enjoy a full and better life style. My sister was one of those clients and I saw how happy she was as she grew to her fullest potential in her home away from home," said Ms. Squier. "Establishing the Center was my way of giving back to Woods what Woods gave to my sister. In the ten years since the Center was started, it has made life more enjoyable and physically easier for Woods’ residents."

The Center serves as a resource, evaluation, and demonstration hub for those who can benefit from specialized equipment and software designed for people with physical challenges. The Center works closely with the educational and vocational programs and therapy services at Woods. This team approach enables teachers and speech, physical, and occupational therapists to be more involved in assessing the specific needs of each person.

Teamwork is a critical component to the success of Woods’ Assistive Technology program. Once a staff member identifies an on-going obstacle that keeps a resident from performing a task, a team of professionals, including Assistive Technology staff, will work together to develop a solution that will enable the individual to move beyond his or her physical limitation.
