July 22, 2022

Help Woods congratulate 29 students who graduated from The Woods Schools on June 29! We are so excited to see where these amazing, talented individuals will head next in their journeys.

Of the 29 who graduated, 10 will transition to Woods’ adult day enrichment program, where they will receive support with socialization, vocational training, health and wellness and purpose. Nine of the graduates will transition into Woods’ work center where they will start employment with the help of The Woods Enterprises. 10 are leaving Woods to move back home or into a community group home.

“I, along with my fellow staff here at Woods, am very proud of this year’s graduates of The Woods Schools for their dedication and determination to complete their education,” said Tine Hansen-Turton, president and CEO of Woods. “Their passion to excel and continually raise the bar for themselves and those surrounding them is inspiring. I am fully confident in their abilities to contribute their talents and rays of light to the world.”

The Woods Schools include the Gardner Education Center and Crestwood Education Center. They provide students of ages 5-22 with year-round special education and supports to help them meet their educational, emotional, behavioral and medical needs, as well as their personal goals. Woods Partners with University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine to Provide Leading-Edge Oral Health Care for Individuals with Disabilities

June 23, 2022

Woods Services, a Pennsylvania-and-New Jersey-based nonprofit organization that serves children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and acquired brain injuries, announced a partnership with the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, one of the leading dental schools in the United States, to provide enhanced and leading-edge dental treatment for its clients and residents. Woods’ existing dental clinic will be extensively renovated and modernized over the next six to eight weeks, and will reopen later this summer as Penn Dental Medicine at Woods, Mikey Faulkner Dental Care Center.

Renovations to the clinic will add two operatories (expanding from three to five), provide state-of-the-art equipment, enhance the waiting area and reception check-in, and migrate current patient files into a new electronic health record system utilized by Penn Dental Medicine.

“Woods is pleased to announce a partnership with the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and to work with the school’s dean, Dr. Mark Wolff, to enhance dental services for our clients and residents,” said Tine Hansen-Turton, president and CEO, Woods Services. “Penn’s personalized care and interdisciplinary team approach are perfectly aligned with Woods, as is its emphasis on preparing the next generation of dentists to care for patients with special needs. Penn’s dentists will be able to perform procedures at our on-campus dental clinic that in the past would have required a visit to a specialist for treatment. This expansion of services will be less disruptive for our clients, further enhancing their quality of life,” she said.

Dr. Mark Wolff was appointed in 2018 as the new Morton Amsterdam Dean at Penn Dental Medicine and brought with him international renown as a pioneer and leader in teaching and providing care for patients with special oral health needs. Upon arrival, he established dental care for persons with disabilities as a priority for the school and set about raising money, renovating a space, and hiring team members, each with 20+ years of experience treating patients with special health care needs. In 2021, Penn Dental Medicine opened the state-of-the-art Care Center for Persons with Disabilities at Penn Dental Medicine, and under his leadership, Penn has established a national reputation for excellence in treating the dental needs of people with disabilities and in training dental students to care for these individuals.

“We are thrilled to be expanding our service and care within the community through this Woods partnership,” says Dean Wolff. “It not only allows us to help provide comprehensive care to the Woods clients, but also offers an invaluable setting for our students to gain experience caring for individuals with a wide range of disabilities.” Postgraduate students within Penn Dental Medicine’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry program will provide clinical care at the center under close faculty supervision.

Woods is organized around the principles of population health management and addresses the social determinants of health through a comprehensive continuum and system of care that connects prevention, wellness, education, behavioral health, and social services with coordinated and integrated healthcare delivery. “The Medical Center at Woods serves as a national model for providing comprehensive, coordinated personalized care for people with complex diagnoses and medical conditions, like Mikey Faulkner, current Woods client and the clinic’s namesake,” Hansen-Turton said. “The opening of Penn Dental Medicine at Woods, Mikey Faulkner Dental Care Center continues Woods’ commitment to providing an integrated healthcare experience for our clients – an approach that optimizes outcomes for individuals.”

Grants from the TD Charitable Foundation, the giving arm of TD Bank, and the Eamon Foundation have been received in support of the renovation of the dental clinic.

The 2022 Run for Woods: A Rainy Run to Remember

May 25, 2022

Consider 2022 a banner year for our annual Run for Woods 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run presented by Faulkner-Ciocca Dealerships, which took place on May 7!

More than $257,000 was raised, which is the largest amount of funds Woods has ever raised for this event – thanks to our generous families and Langhorne community. We are also grateful for this year’s record number of more than 50 sponsors. This includes our presenting sponsor Faulkner-Ciocca Dealerships.

We also had several Gold Sponsors, specifically Ally Financial, Ethos Group, Inc., Homestead Smart Health Plans, Johnson, Kendall & Johnson, Inc., Parx Casino, and TD Bank. Our Silver sponsors were Audi of America, Conner Strong & Buckelew, Experian, Hangley Aronchick Segal Pudlin & Schiller, Razor Technology, Barry & Michelle Sharer, Synergy Pharmacy Services, and Volkswagen of America. A&K Industrial, Allies, Angelo’s Carpet One, Ardex Labs, CARFAX, Alice DeVoe and John Szabo, Future Scripts, Hyundai, Legacy Treatment Services, M&T Bank, PFMAM, Sailaja & Shankar Musunuri, Ricciardi Brothers/Benjamin Moore, Subaru of America, Top to Bottom Home Improvements LLC, Wawa Foundation, and Zimmerman Auto Body Supply were our Bronze sponsors.

The group ends with our Friendship sponsors Beth and Roger Angrick, Archway Programs, Bayada Home Health Care, Bob’s Discount Furniture, Boyle Construction, Woods Community at Brian’s House, Cars.com, Chubb, Cox Automotive, Crown Holdings, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Fenningham Demptster & Coval LLP, FRS Advisors, GM Financial, Harvest Moon, La La Lobster, Margolis Edelstein, Ridge Policy Group, Rob’s Automotive & Collision Center, Roscommon International, PRN Consultants, Scoles Systems, Tabor Children’s Services, Volkswagen Credit, and Weber Gallagher.

And while the weather was determined to rain on Woods’ parade during the event, our clients, staff and greater Langhorne community kept marching, walking, wheeling and running along. A beautiful ceremony kicked off the race, which saw Pa. State Sen. Tommy Tomlinson earn the Woods Services Humanitarian Award. Attendees also witnessed our resident Whit Park receive an award for being the highest individual fundraiser, a tribute to his mother who recently passed.

We are fortunate to be able to use the funds raised to further our mission in providing innovative, comprehensive, and integrated health, education, housing, workforce, behavioral health, and case management services. These services support our clients who have intellectual, developmental, and medical disabilities and acquired brain injury. We couldn’t do it without the help of the community around us, and for that, we say – THANK YOU!

To relive the May 7 event, enjoy this fantastic photo story from our friend Nancy Rokos at the Bucks County Courier Times. We’ve also included some photos below for your pleasure.

April 13, 2022

LANGHORNE, Pa. (March 31, 2022) – Woods Services in Langhorne, Pa., invites runners, walkers and rollers of all abilities to participate in the 2022 Run for Woods 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run presented by Faulkner-Ciocca Dealerships on Saturday, May 7, 2022. The festivities kick off with an opening ceremony at 8:45 a.m., followed by the 5K at 9:00 a.m., and the 1-Mile Fun Run at 9:10 a.m. The run/walk course winds through the campus of Woods Services, a nonprofit organization that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and acquired brain injury, and through the Langhorne community. The registration fee is $45 and participants can register at RunForWoods.org.

Woods Services has already raised $211,000 from sponsors in Bucks County and the Greater Philadelphia community and race fundraising teams. Funds will support Woods Services in its mission to provide innovative, comprehensive, and integrated health, education, housing, workforce, behavioral health, and case management services to children and adults in the intellectual and developmental disability, behavioral, child welfare, and brain trauma public health sectors who have complex and intensive medical and behavioral healthcare needs.

This is the 8th annual Run for Woods. Events in 2020 and 2021 were held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A virtual option is available again this year. For those participating in person, either as racers or spectators, masks will be required on the Woods campus and at the start and finish lines. Masks will not be mandatory for racers while on other parts of the course.

“We are immensely grateful to the running community, our sponsors and Bucks County neighbors, and our Woods families and friends for their ongoing support of the Woods Services Run for Woods,” said Tine Hansen-Turton, president and CEO of Woods Services. “Their participation helps Woods Services –a nonprofit, life cycle care management and advocacy organization –provide exceptional educational, vocational and recreational opportunities that enrich lives and increase independence. The event also builds awareness of Woods’ care approach, which addresses the whole person and their changing physical and behavioral health needs throughout their lifetimes.”

Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place male and female finishers. With the $45 registration fee, all participants will receive an official race t-shirt, race medal, and post-race snack bag. Participants, community members and businesses are also invited to underwrite participation for a Woods resident and their support staff member with a donation of $90. They are encouraged to share photos and videos with the Woods community and family and friends using #R4W on social media. About Woods Services

Woods Services is a nonprofit, life cycle care management and advocacy organization that, along with six affiliate organizations located in Pennsylvania and New Jersey – Abilities of Northwest NJ, Allies, Inc., Archway Programs, Legacy Treatment Services, Tabor Children’s Services, and Woods Community at Brian’s House – provides innovative, comprehensive, and integrated health, education, housing, workforce, behavioral health, and case management services to more than 20,000 children and adults in the intellectual and developmental disability, behavioral, child welfare, and brain trauma public health sectors who have complex and intensive medical and behavioral healthcare needs. Founded in 1913 by Philadelphia schoolteacher Mollie Woods with two simple goals – to advance quality of life and standard of care for individuals with disabilities – Woods Services continues its mission today by helping children and adults with disabilities or challenges to achieve their highest potential.  Among the ways Woods does this is through its population health management strategy, which includes the integration of primary and specialty medical care with behavioral health in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Beechwood NeuroRehab Hosts Wheelchair Wash and Tune

April 9, 2022

Looking good and feeling good – the wheelchairs of Beechwood NeuroRehab have undergone some spring cleaning.

Therapy Aide Shelby Tibbetts created and hosted a “Wheelchair Wash and Tune” where chairs were cleaned, repaired, and examined for further fixes and replacement.

“The same way we want to have a clean house or clean car, they want – and deserve – a clean wheelchair,” Tibbetts said. “But they may not necessarily have the ability to do this, so we do this so their wheelchairs can be squeaky clean… It hurts me when they’re unclean, so I’ve really taken an interest in giving them attention,” Tibbetts said.

Beechwood held its first Wash and Tune in September 2020 with her, the help of some clinicians over their lunch, and wheelchair vendor NuMotion. Isolated amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Tibbetts felt the event would engage staff, residents, and the vendor positively and fill some of the time lost from closed programming.

The effects of the event reach far beyond just a clean set of wheels.

In addition to basic wheelchair care, the group also took inventory of everyone’s wheelchairs. With serial numbers cleaned off, Tibbetts created a massive spreadsheet detailing when each wheelchair was due for maintenance or complete replacement. The result: the team placed 20 wheelchair orders.

The Wash and Tune also helps build relationships with the vendor. Hosting weekly repair clinics and these clinics allows Beechwood to stay top-of-mind when services are needed.

This year, the wash was on two separate days, March 23 and April  5. On March 23, Tibbetts sought the assistance of our recreation department. With this help in hand, nearly 30 wheelchairs were washed and repaired. April 5 yielded a similar result.

Tibbetts began in a field far different than Beechwood. Originally a hairstylist, she would cut hair for clients. Her interests grew; she joined the staff and is now studying to become a Physical Therapy Aide at Harcum College.
